GOSSYPIUM HIRSUTUM, also called " Mexican cotton " or " Cotton Pays " (French Antilles), is a species of Plants Dicotyledons of Family of Malvaceae, Subfamille of Malvodideae, originally from the tropical regions ofAmerica. This is the species of Cotonnier mostly cultivated in the United States and in the world. It provides approximately 90 % of global production of Cotton (textile fibers). The trituration of seeds also provides by-products used in human and animal food, in particular Cotton oil and Cotton cotton kit (EN). The plant is toxic to mammals due to the presence of Gossypol in all its organs.

Archaeological traces found in Mexico show that the culture of this species dates from at least 7000 years. It is the oldest proof of cotton cultivation on earth.

It includes a number of Cultivars with a fiber of different lengths and tolerant to a certain number of growth conditions. The most resistant, the most cultivated varieties are called 'Long Upland' and the least resistant are said 'Short Staple Upland'.

GOSSYPIUM HIRSUTUM is an annual herbaceous plant which reaches 60 to 150 cm high. The rod axis is green, sometimes reddish, and has simple hair. The leaves are lobed, with a maximum of five lobes of more or less triangular shape. The foliar limmbe 5 to 10 cm long, has a width slightly greater than the length. The base of the blade is corded. The Petiole measures 3 to 10 cm long. Petioles and leaves are hairy. The flowers, white, yellowish or reddish, grouped in Inflorescences axillary, are about 2.5 cm long. The fruit is a capsule 3 to 4 cm long by 2 to 3 cm wide, composed of three to five lodges. The seeds, oval, measure 0.3 to 0.5 cm long. The fibers surrounding the seeds (cotton) are long and white.
