The Zelkova of Japan (Zelkova Serrata) is a fucked tree with lanceolate laceded leaves of the Ulmaceae family. It is called Keyaki (欅, ケヤキ) to Japan. Philipp Franz von Siebold, introduced it to the Netherlands in 1830.

10 seeds - Rusticity up to -20 ° C

Zelkova Serrata is a deciduous tree up to 30 m in height. It is characterized by a short trunk divided quickly into a beam of several erect branches forming a wide and round head. These branches are straight or curved outwards, giving an flared and fairly wide port, unlike Zelkova of the Caucasus which has a partly similar but more vertical branch composed of much more numerous and more directed branches The interior of the tree, giving it a very differentiated port. The wearing of the Zelkova of Japan recalls that of theOrme of America, but with a lower trunk and an often wider crown. The tree develops quickly when it is young but the growth rate slows down over time.

It has alternate leaves growing up to 5 cm long and wide. The leaves are simple and oval in oblong-ovals with serrated or crenellated margins, which gave the tree its specific epithet Serrata. The leaves are acuminate or apiculated, rounded or suborded to the base, and contain 8-14 pairs of veins. The leaves are rough on the top and almost glabrous on the underside. Green to dark green in the spring and throughout the summer, going to yellows, oranges and reds in autumn. The Petioles measure 2 to 5 mm.

Z. Serrata develops monoic flowers in the spring with the leaves. The buds are ovoid. They diverge at an angle of 45 degrees compared to the rod. Staminated flowers are approximately 3 mm in diameter, grouped in the lower leaves. The female flowers are solitary in the armpit in the upper, sessile leaves and usually about 1.5 mm in diameter. The flowers are yellow-green, not showy, and occur in tight groups along new stems.

The flowers give small Drupes Ovees that ripen in the fall. The 3 mm diameter subsessile drupe is first green and then maturation brown.

To identify Zelkova Serrata, you have to find a short trunk, with low ramification and a vase -shaped port. The twigs are thin with small dark conical buds in the shape of a zigzag. The branches are generally glabrous. The bark is grayish white to grayish brown and either smooth with lenticels or exfoliating plates to reveal the orange internal bark. The branches are brown brown.
