KOELREUTERIA Paniculata, Savonnier, is a tree of Family of Sapindaceae Originally from China and Korea. It has become an ornamental tree of temperate regions for its aesthetic aspect.

It is a rapid growth tree which can reach a height of 10 at 12 M at maturity. Its Port is widely spread out, its brunette bark with pale brown cracks over time.
Its deciduous leaves are pinned or partly bipennated, and make forty centimeters long. They are made up of leaflets lobed or serrated, or divided into foliolules of about 10 CM long. In the fall, its green foliage becomes golden.
The flowers, with four yellow petals, appreciated by bees, are formed at the end of the branches in conical panicles of 20 to 40 CM long, hence its name in English : Goldenrain Tree, " Golden rain tree ". These panicles are formed in the second part of summer, and give birth to lampion -shaped capsules, 3 to 6 long CM and 2 to 4 wide CM. These first pale green become brown-marron at maturity. Each fruit lobe contains a brown and spherical seed with a diameter of 4 to 7 MM. The fruits persist until the following spring.
It is declared as invasive plant in certain regions such as Florida.
Savonnier is an easy culture tree that needs an exposure in full sun. It is rustic (USDA zone 6), does not fear frost and is not the target of pests or diseases.
It supports both sandy and argligious floors even if they are poor, acidic or alkaline. It also supports the wind (despite its superficial rooting) and air pollution.
Savonnier is used as a alignment tree for its ease of culture.
The saponin present in the bark and the fruit is used in Asia to make natural soap from where its name " soap
In Asia, its seeds are also used to make rosaries and necklaces.
