Domestic sorbier, cormier, sorbus domestica |

The Cormier or Sorbier Domestic (Sorbus Domestica L.) is a tree of the family of Rosaceae. It gives fruits called " Cormes " resembling small Apples or Pears, hence their nickname. It is one of the species tested in Agrosylviculure in France, in fields or vines1.In Canada, the species called Cormier is the Sorbier of America, a neighboring species. It is often confused with Sorbier of birds.

A species of origin Mediterranean, he originally lived throughout the perimeter of the basin. It was spread at the time of theRoman Empire even in the rest of Europe.

In its Biotope from the South, it hardly exceeds 10 to 12 m in height and a trunk diameter from 30 to 45 cm. Going up in the dotter and richer soils, it reaches circumferences twice as large and, in the forest, manages to match the largest trees. A variety among sorbarium species has an ease of acclimatization in many different areas. With current plant migrations and distribution areas that grow with changing temperatures, it will have no problem with its integration into new areas.

Its multiplication by germination is not very effective in certain biotopes and its rejections not always sufficient to perpetuate the species. This is why the assistance of humans is necessary for plantations and selections of individuals with rich genetic characters[Interprétation personnelle ?] (especially in the northern part of France, beyond the line going from Drôme from north to south of the Dordogne).

It is a tree withBark Brun-Orange, which resembles that of Oak2, Aux Leaves Caduques Pennées (13 to 21 Leaflets) and White Flowers . Its green fruits stained with mature reddish can be matured Apples (Maliformes) or small pears (piriform) according to Cultivars. These fruits are very appreciated by small mammals, in particular badger (meles meles) which plays a primordial role in the dissemination of the seeds3 (buried excrement containing seeds).

This species is post-pioneer. It has high light needs (even if it prefers a slight shade in full sun) ; It is a strong growth and continuous axis tree capable of developing a large Houppier. It is often found on somewhat difficult stations, not that the best floors do not suit it (on the contrary, the tree benefits very well), but because trees of competing species benefit better and will supplant it less than human intervention.

The average longevity of the Cormier is 150 to 200 years, individuals up to more than four centuries.

Cormier is an increasingly rare tree. He appears on the list of species in danger in Swiss8 and in Austria. The Lorraine Flore Atlas considers it " Rare " on the territory considered9. Cultivated in nursery in France, it appeared in  in 38E Position in the prize list of essences (22E Position of leafy species ) with 45 469 Plants sold, number in regression compared to that of the previous year2.

The seeds, rid of a transparent envelope, require several months of cold stratification at 4 °. Even buried, they are the target of Mulots.

Cormier has some enemies like insects or Mushrooms parasites, the Nectrian chancre particularly virulent.
