20 seeds

Thespecies has been described by the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné in 1753. They come from the circular and translucent form of the fruits, comparable to coins : Currency-du-Pape, Judas medal (allusion to thirty pieces of silver that Judas received to betray Jesus), ECU grass. The plant can reach 120 CM for a diameter of 50 CM if the cultivation conditions are favorable to it. The Leaves ovals, cordiforms, dotted, medium to light green, do 10 to 15 CM Long. In May-June, The Inflorescences appear in large leafy clusters from 10 to 20 CM long, lengthening as the flowering progresses. The flower of 5 to 20 mm in diameter, is made up of four petals white with pale purple. The fruit are From silica platforms of 3 to 8 cm long. The Seeds are visible inside the silica thanks to the two transparent valves containing them, first green then beige. When these external valves are lifted, from the bottom to the top, the partition separating the two seeds of seeds appears, showing an appearance of a pearly coin, fitted with a remaining of the styles of the ovary of 5 to 10 MM Long.

The leaves, flowers and fruits before maturity are edible raw or cooked. Very young fruits can be kept by Lacto-Fermentation. The roots and seeds, with a spicy and bitter flavor, were used as a spice in Europe. Grilled seeds allow you to prepare a good tea4.

In floristry, the pearly central membrane of the Silic is used in dry bouquets, after the fall of the valves or after having withdrawn them.

This reason was very represented in the movement Art Nouveau of theSchool of Nancy.
