Carum Carvi, Carvi or Cumin des Prés, is a species of herbaceous plant biennial of the family of APIACES (Ombellifères), cultivated for its Leaves and especially its Seeds, used for their aromatic qualities (like Condiment) and Medicinal. It is a plant close to Fenouil,Green Anis andOdorant Aneth. in high doses, this plant can be toxic[réf. nécessaire]. It is sometimes called Anis des Vosges, Cumin de Hollande2 or Cumin des Montagnes3.

In Alsace and in French -speaking Switzerland Carvi is called Cumin, which can be confused.
It is part of the plants whose culture is recommended in the royal fields by Charlemagne in the capitular of Villis (End of VIIIe or beginning of the IXe century)[réf. nécessaire].
