L 'Common eyelet (Dianthus coaryllus) or Oil of florists, Giroflé carnation, eyelet Chabaud, is a species of herbaceous plants of the family of Caryophyllaceae. Its Cultivars innumerable are produced as Ornamental plants for their flowers of various colors, white, pink or red.

This species is probably from the edges of the Mediterranean, and widely spread by cultures since theAntiquity. It belongs to the genre Dianthus (Fleur dedicated to Zeus) which includes nearly 300 species.

It is a kind of perennial herbaceous plants thanks to its branched underground rod, 10 to 80 high CM. The leaves are very elongated and the stems knotted. The flowers, with petals toothed at the top, are pink, white, sometimes mixed with purple, and flourish all summer. It is found quite commonly in almost all of central and southern Europe and in northern Africa, in dry and rocky terrains.

The many cultivars rank in two groups :

• races not Ramen : flowering limited to spring or early summer
  • Grenadin eyelet, with red flowers ;
• raisses races : several successive flowers from spring to fall
  • Electrical when going up to iron rod, double flowers and very rigid stem, used as a cut flower.

Not to be confused withpoet's eyelet, Dianthus Barbatus, nor withMignardise eyelet, Dianthus Plumarius, also commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant, for the borders of gardens.

Nor with theIndia eyelet, Tagetes Patula.

These eyelets prefer a healthy, well -drained soil and sunny exposure. Planting in April May using plants from cuttings. The harvest begins four months after planting.
