Metasequoia glyptostroboides, also called water fir, is a kind of large tree in the family of taxodiaceae, or cupressaceae according to Phylogenetic classification. He is from China where he was discovered in 1943. It is the only living species of the genus Metasequoia whose origin dates back to Pliocene and as such is considered as a Panchronic form.

The Name of the genre Metasequoia comes from Greek Meta (" close to ") and Sequoia, a kind of big trees of the same family. TheSpecific epithet Glyptostroboides means " similar to Glyptostrobus ". Glyptostrobus Pensilis is a Chinese marsh cypress, also from China.

Metassequoia is a fast growing tree. In wet and sunny soil, metassequoia can grow approximately one meter a year.

It is a rustic species under temperate climate, which is easily acclimated to culture in gardens. It is now largely planted as an ornamental tree in parks around the world.

Many Cultivars have been selected and have been offered in culture since the early 1980s. The first, at Port Pyramidal narrow, created in 1958 by theNational Arboretum of the United States, was baptized Metasequoia Glyptostroboides 'National'.
