The Coqueret du Pérou (Physalis Peruviana ; En Spanish : Aguaymanto ; En Aymara : Topotopo ; in languages Quechua : Uchuva[réf. souhaitée]) is a species of the genus Physalis Originally fromSouth America (Colombia, Bolivia, Pérou) and acclimatized in Africa. It should not be confused with Physalis Pruinosa, called " Cherry de Terre " in Canada.

Belonging to the family of Solanaceae, such as Tomato, the potato, the pepper, theAubergine, the Pepper but also toxic plants such as Sweetness or Jusquiame, it is not close to the cherry or Groseille as its various vernacular names could make it think.

Very branching plant, its stems reach 70 CM to one meter. The fruit is the size of a cherry, orange yellow, juicy and slightly acidic flavor. It is contained in a sort of membraneous bag and parchment of amber yellow color.

30 seeds - direct sowing at 18 ° C

The plant can be sustainable in hot climate. It is 45 at 90 CM high with very trendy erected stems. Petiole of 2 at 5 CM, oval leaves with whole or slightly toothed edge of 6 at 15 CM by 4 at 10 CM. Campanulé chalice 7 at 9 MM. Yellow corolla with spotted throat 1.2 at 1.5 CM by 1.2 at 2 CM. Calice of green fruit, ovoid from 2.5 to 4 CM with 5 at 10 Angles. The whole plant is pubescent. The Fruit is a small Bay Round, the size of a ball (1 to 1.5 CM in diameter) of Color yellow to shiny orange, filled with small seeds, and protected by a sheet of leaves, made up of the welded sepales which makes it look like a lampion. This fruit is very soft, ideal for pies and jams.

The harvest of the physalis is manual and delicate, it is fragile, the price of this fruit is therefore high, which is why it is marketed as a garnish. It is consumed fresh, nature, in jam [archive] (excellent, but you must add pectin because the physalis does not contain), and also in dry fruit, in sweet kitchen or salty. The fruits remaining inside their envelope can be stored at room temperature between 30 and 45 days.

In the firms of fruit rich in antioxidants, the Physalis, with an index Orac of 1770, has an average antioxidant activity but much less than the Common Lyciet (Lycium Barbarum). The fruit, of which one can make an oil, is rich in essential fatty acids, in carotenoids (excellent source of Provitamin A, 3000 UI of Carotene g), in Vitamin C, in Vitamin E and in Phytosterols. It also has some of the complexes of Vitamin B. Few Proteins (0.3 %) but an exceptional rate of Phosphorus (6 % of AJR per 100g).[réf. nécessaire]

The Physalis Peruviana thus makes it possible to strengthen the optic nerve and relieve sore throat. It is recommended for people with diabetes of all types, promotes the treatment of people with affections of prostate and purifies Blood thanks to its Properties Diuretics and is also used as a natural tranquilizer for its content in flavonoids.[réf. nécessaire]

Attention ! The still green fruits contain enough Solanine to trigger a gastroenteritis  and a Diarrhea if they are ingested. Children should be prevented from eating fruit1.
