Silene Chalcedonica ( Syn. Lychnis Chalcedonica ), the Malta Cross [2] [3] [4] or Lychnis Écoulette , [3] [4] is a species of flower plant of Family of Caryophyllaceae, from the center and eastern Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Northwest of China. Other common names include Bristol Fleur , Cross of Jerusalem [5] and Nonesuch . [6]
It is an ornamental plant popular in the gardens and won the price of the merit of the Jardin de la Royal Horticultural Society . [7]
This plant was initially officially appointed Lychnis Chalcedonica by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. [8] for the purpose of taxonomic stability, the genre name Lychnis A been formally rejected in 1994 and the name Silene has been preserved. [9] [10] The plant is now known as Silene Chalcedonica , a name published by Ernst Hans Ludwig Krause in 1901. [1] [11]
The specific epithet Chalcedonica refers to the ancient city of Chalcedon in current Turkey. [12]

It is a Plant Herbaceous Perennial pushing from 35 to 100 cm (1.1 to 3.3 feet) in height with unarmed stems. Simple leaves, largely lanceolate , are produced by opposite pairs. Each sheet measures between 2 and 12 cm (1 and 5 in) long and 1 and 5 cm (0.4 and 2.0 in) in diameter.
Flowers bright red are produced in clusters from 10 to 50 together. Each flower of 1 to 3 cm (0.4 to 1.2 in) in diameter with a corolla deeply at five lobes, each lobe being then divided into two smaller lobes. This forms a general form close to that of the Malta Cross to which it owes one of its common names. The Fruit is a Capsule Dry containing many Seeds .
