The Pavot Sleeve or Pavot à Opium (Papaver Rooferum), also called " Pavot des Jardins ", is a species of herbaceous plant Annual Family of PapaveRaceae from southern Europe and North Africa. Known for its properties Psychotropices sedatives, it is also cultivated for ornamental or food purposes.

Many cultivars ornamental exist today (Paeoniflorum known as " on Flower of Peony " for example). However, there were two varieties of poppy poppy :

  • Papaver Surveyerum Var. Album - The white poppy or opium poppy. White and fruit corolla flowers Déhiscent containing yellowish white seeds. It is more specifically from this variety that is extracted the Latex in order to make theOpium.
  • Papaver Surveyerum Var. NIGRUM - The black poppy, eyelette or blue poppy, cultivated for its seeds. Flowers with corollas of a purplish red and dehiscent fruit (whose capsules present, on the edge of the stigmatic plateau, pores, opening when the fruit dries out, and by which the seeds are released) containing gray seeds- Blue-Ardenae. These seeds are used in the agro-food, in a bakery or to producecarnation oil.

All Varieties of Papaver Surchase contain alkaloids Opiacés whose best known are Codeine and Morphine. The latter, in addition to the therapeutic production for its analgesic effects, is the subject of illicit traffic essentially intended for its transformation into a synthetic opiate : theheroin. The poppy seeds, widely used in the diet, contain only a very small amount of alkaloids. The same applies toOil that they produce : theeyelet oil. The opium poppy is also widely cultivated for the flowering of gardens and green spaces.

Formerly, the Papaver Surchase, was considered a Magic Plant associated with Black Magic. The sleeping pod is probably domesticated in the west of the Mediterranean in the Neolithic1.

In XIIIe century, Sainte Hildegarde indicates that " Eating the seed brings sleep ". Still around that time, the popular peeler was part of the herbs of the virgins prescribed by the Matrones for abort discreetly and save appearances2.
